Apparently, after the birth of a baby, you can send a birth announcement card to the White House Greetings Office with the name of the baby, birth date, name of the parents and a return mailing address and receive a greeting from the President.

Cost to clean air ducts

As part of our “How much does it cost?” series, we recently had our air ducts cleaned. The whole project ended up costing $500 with a NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association) certified HVAC company in Delaware county, Pennsylvania.

As always, standard disclaimer applies as costs vary based on your location, project requirements, permits and other fees.

The company we ended up using is called Interior Maintenance Company (IMC) in Lansdowne PA. We selected the company because it was based in Lansdowne and we wanted to support our local town in some way. The company provided an estimate based on the number of registers we had in our home. Their current breakdown of costs based on registers:

1 – 6 registers – $295
7 – 9 registers – $385
10 – 12 registers – $440
13 – 15 registers – $490
16 – 18 registers – $540
19 – 21 registers – $590
22 – 24 registers – $650
25 – 27 registers – $710

What was odd with IMC is that they charged a different amount for sanitizing the registers (i.e. $65) and also for dryer exhausts (i.e. $165.00) , rest room exhausts ($15.00) etc. They did take pictures of how the air ducts looked before and after the cleaning was done. Honestly, the ‘before’ pictures of our air ducts looked pretty good and so I found ample reasons to wonder if it truly was worth paying for having the air ducts cleaned.

Harvest Festival at Newlin Grist Mill

For a free event, history in any form is worth every moment. For a harvest festival at Newlin Grist Mill it’s a whole other experience.

As described on the Newlin Grist Mill site:

Historic demonstrators and craftsmen arrive at Newlin Grist Mill to demonstrate the sights sounds and smells of 18th century life. Smell the first of a wood-burning bake oven with Blue Hen Bakers, watch open hearth cooks work over an open fire, hear the sounds of iron pounding in the blacksmith shop, and have your own silhouette made. Enjoy the sounds or period harp and mandolin music or catch a performance of 18th century acapella music by The Colonial Revelers.

We enjoyed all of this thanks to Nathaniel and Mary Newlin, who in 1704, built a water-powered grist mill along the West Branch of Chester Creek.

Arnica Gel After Vaccination

Has anyone used Arnica Gel to soothe pain from vaccination shots? We picked up a tube from Whole Foods after hearing friends talk about how they loved the product, especially since it was considered to be a homeopathic medicine.

From the Arnicare website,

Arnica montana is the Latin name for a perennial that grows 1 to 2 feet tall with bright, yellow daisy-like flowers that appear in July and August. It is found on the moist, grassy upland meadows in the hills and mountains of northern and central Europe and Siberia. It is also found sparsely in the northwestern United States. More common names for Arnica are Mountain daisy, Leopard’s bane and Mountain tobacco. Arnica is toxic when ingested at full strength, but it can be used as an ointment, gel or cream on unbroken skin or taken internally when it is diluted homeopathically.

Vornado AVH4 vs. Vornado AVH2

We did our homework and confirmed that Vornado heaters are a good investment for homes trying to save some money on their heating bills. From the Vornado website, the marketing pitch for their heaters is:

Vornado small heaters are more energy-efficient thanks to unique vortex action which circulates heat evenly throughout the room. More efficient air movement saves energy and allows Vornado energy-efficient electric heaters to warm an entire room faster than other space heaters! And with a Vornado, there are no “blind spots” in the circulation of warm air, because the air is constantly being heated and re-circulated. Unlike conventional air heaters Vornado makes sure that every bit of heat energy it generates is used well.

In order to save even more money on this purchase we decided to try to buy the Vornado heater from Bed, Bath and Beyond using one of the famous 20% coupons. Look familiar?

However, try as we might, we could not find the Vornado AVH2 for sale either online or at the retail Bed, Bath and Beyond store. We ended up buying the Vornado AVH4 which comes with the same standard 5 year warranty, has the cool touch case, the automatic safety shut off system, the automatic tip-over protection and the thermostat as well.

I was still curious what the main difference was between the AVH2 and the AVH4, so I ended up calling Vornado at (800) 234-0604 and discovered that aside from the AVH4 being exclusive to Bed, Bath and Beyond, the other primary difference is that the AVH4 is manufactured in China. If you’re looking for a good Vornado heater that is manufactured in the United States, then the AVH2 is the heater to get.

Restoring the Lansdowne Theater
