Over the last year we’ve slowly started taking steps to filter the water that we use at home. One of the main reasons for this decision is the amount of chlorine and other contaminants in the water. Chlorine is universally used to chemically disinfect water. It kills germs, bacteria and other living organisms. For the longest time we’ve been using Brita filters for all drinking and cooking needs. However, we weren’t doing anything to filter the our chlorine exposure when showering. After doing some research online, we found out that chlorine is not only absorbed through the skin, but also re-vaporized in the shower, inhaled into the lungs, and transferred directly into the blood system. In fact, the chlorine exposure from one shower is equal to an entire day’s amount of drinking the same water.
We looked at whole house water filtration units but currently these products are out of our price range and based on the product demonstrations we saw required some monthly maintenance. As a result, for our shower we decided to try the Sprite Shower Filter. These filters cost about $25 and need to have their filter cartridges replaced every 6 months. The filter cartridge costs about $10.
You can read more about the Sprite Shower Filtration technology on the Sprite Shower Filters website. Also, if it helps the particular model we bought was made in the United States.
